Orinda Union School District

A Learning Community that Inspires, Engages, and Supports All Students

Overview

The Orinda Union School District is committed to maintaining healthy and safe learning environments for students and staff while minimizing the use of pesticides whenever practicable.

The District follows an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach that focuses on long-term prevention and management of pests through monitoring, sanitation, exclusion, maintenance, and physical or mechanical controls. When treatment is necessary, the District uses effective methods designed to minimize risks to people, property, and the environment.

Healthy Schools Act

The California Healthy Schools Act (HSA) establishes requirements for pesticide use at California public schools and encourages the use of Integrated Pest Management practices.

In accordance with the Healthy Schools Act, OUSD maintains an Integrated Pest Management Plan, provides required pesticide notifications, maintains pesticide-use records, provides applicable staff training, and follows posting and reporting requirements.

OUSD's IPM Approach

OUSD focuses on preventing pest problems before pesticide treatment becomes necessary. District staff and licensed pest management professionals monitor facilities and grounds for pest activity and conditions that may contribute to pest problems.

IPM strategies may include:
  • Improving sanitation and removing food sources
  • Correcting leaks and standing water
  • Sealing cracks and pest entry points
  • Installing barriers
  • Physical removal and trap
  • Managing irrigation and landscape conditions
  • Using pesticides when necessary and appropriate

These practices are consistent with the approach documented in OUSD's current IPM Plan.

Pesticide Notifications

OUSD provides parents, guardians, and staff with annual notification of pesticide products expected to be used at District school sites.

Parents/guardians and staff may register to receive advance notification of individual pesticide applications subject to Healthy Schools Act notification requirements. Registered individuals will receive notification by email at least 72 hours before an applicable pesticide application.
