Orinda Union School District

A Learning Community that Inspires, Engages, and Supports All Students
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, all schools in California will screen students in grades kindergarten through second grade for risk of reading difficulties in compliance with Ed Code 53008. In Orinda Union School District, we are expanding this effort to include students in kindergarten through fifth grade, as reading challenges can also occur beyond second grade. On June 2, 2025 our School Board of Education adopted mCLASS DIBELS (Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills) from the California list of approved screening instruments.
What is reading screening?

What is reading screening?

A reading screener is a short assessment used to quickly identify which students may be at risk for reading difficulties. It gives teachers valuable information about specific reading skills so they can provide the right support as early as possible. In the past, Orinda Union has used the Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) assessment to measure reading levels. Beginning this year, we have transitioned to a new reading assessment, DIBELS mCLASS, which provides more detailed and reliable data about student reading development.
