Extended Day Kindergarten

2018-19 School Year
In our fourth year of operating an extended kindergarten program, we look forward to continuing on the path of providing an outstanding kindergarten experience to all of our students and their families entering our schools.

An extended day for kindergarten, as defined by the California Department of Education, is a program that exceeds four hours of instructional time.

In the Spring of 2015 school year, a district committee comprised of four teachers, two parents, and two administrators, was formed to study the feasibility and the financial implications of an extended day model for kindergarten. The committee presented options for extending the day from 3.5 hours to 5 hours (including a kindergarten-only lunch/recess and 55 additional classroom minutes) at the April 13, 2015 board meeting. At this time, the district is continuing to plan for implementation of an Extended Day Kindergarten schedule (EDK) to begin in August 2015. A resolution to establish an Early Primary Program was approved at the May 11, 2015 board meeting. The resolution included criteria for ensuring that an extended day includes ample opportunities for both active and quiet activities within an integrated, experiential, and developmentally appropriate educational program throughout the school day.

In the Spring of 2016, the Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK) Committee reconvened to assess the first year of implementation. Common guiding questions were developed to survey parents and kindergarten teachers at each site. The committee analyzed the results gathered from each school site. Based on the Spring 2016 feedback, a few relevant points emerged for successful continuation of the EDK program:

  • Teachers and parents were overwhelmingly positive about the benefits of Extended-Day Kindergarten.

  • Teachers indicated they have more time to progress through the curriculum that includes small group instruction and going deeper into the curricular areas at a pace that is appropriate for the students.

  • Parents reported that the amount of information that children are learning has increased. The social and emotional connections have improved with a longer day as students are building friendships and deeper bonds with peers in a structured environment.

  • The additional instructional minutes have allowed for the appropriate implementation of Readers, Writers, and Math Workshop time.

  • The social, emotional and intellectual benefits to students, with more instructional time, have been demonstrated through student stamina and balance of developmentally appropriate activities.

A committee report was presented to the Board of Trustees at the May 9, 2016 Board Meeting. The report included recommendations for the extended day model with scheduling and communication to continue as an area of focus at each site.
