Our Mission for School Safety
We continue to keep the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School and the community of Newtown, Connecticut in our minds and in our hearts. Though our hearts are heavy, we also remain vigilant in our efforts to secure and ensure the safety of our students while in our care.
Over the last month, prior to this tragic incident, our district has been working closely with the Orinda Police Department to assess each of our schools, specifically for the security and safety of students and staff. Our school principals are working with public safety officers and our facilities department to implement recommendations. In addition, we will devote time at our next staff development day to review and revise individual School Safety Plans.
I am attaching a link from the U.S. Department of Education sent to us this week. It lists some resources that may be of assistance in addition to others that you have received from your school.
School Board Reorganization
At the December 10th school board meeting, Pat Rudebusch, retiring board president was recognized for her twelve years of dedicated service. Newly elected member Sarah Butler and incumbent member Matt Moran took the Oath of Office to begin their four years of service on the school board. The board elected Julie Rossiter as their president and Dr. Chris Severson as vice-president for the coming year.
School Funding with Proposition 30
We are thankful that California voters approved Proposition 30. Fortunately, the passage of this proposition will prevent our district from a mid-year reduction of over $1 million to our general fund. Unfortunately, California funding for public education still ranks at the bottom of the list. The passage of this proposition does not guarantee any new funding. We continue to be thankful for the support from EFO and parent clubs as we endure the challenges of “flat funding” for our schools. Our district’s Fiscal Advisory Committee, comprised of parents, staff, board and public, began meeting in November to address our district’s financial planning needs.
On behalf of the school district, we wish you and your family a happy holiday season. We look forward to a new year of health and success.
