6th Grade Core:  Language Art & Ancient Civilizations

Sixth grade Core covers three class periods of your child's day. In Core we learn Language Arts, which is reading and writing. Our Social Studies program focuses on ancient civilizations. Report cards will show two letter grades for core: one for Language Arts and one for Social Studies.

Language Arts

In Language Arts we will read independently, in partners, groups and as a whole class.  Students should have an independent reading book with them all year and read at least 30 minutes a day everyday.  In addition, students will learn, practice and master many reading skills using fiction (especially realistic fiction, historical fiction and fantsy) and nonfiction (especially expository). We will also be writing quite a bit, learning about language mechanics and grammar and their use in creative writing.  Students will also research and write an indepth report on a topic of their own choice.
